Beginner tackle box checklist: what to carry and why

The Wet That Line team · Updated October 10, 2026

You don’t need a giant box to start. A small tackle box with a few of each of these covers most days on the bank, a pier or a small boat.

Hooks

Hook sizes run backwards at first: smaller hooks have bigger numbers, so a size 10 is smaller than a size 2. Above size 1 they switch to 1/0, 2/0, 3/0, which get bigger as the number rises. A few sizes cover a lot of fishing: small ones for panfish and trout, larger ones for bass and catfish.

Frequently asked questions

How do fishing hook sizes work?

Smaller hooks have bigger numbers: a size 10 is smaller than a size 2. Above size 1 the sizes become 1/0, 2/0, 3/0 and so on, and those get bigger as the number rises.

What should a beginner put in a tackle box?

A few hook sizes, split shot and sliding weights, a couple of bobbers, swivels, a small set of soft plastics and jig heads, a spinner, pliers and line clippers is enough for most bank and pier fishing.

Do I need a big tackle box?

No. A small box with a few of each item covers most trips, and it's easier to carry. Add to it as you learn what works on your water.
